I have looked in box power options properties in the control panel and under the tab UPS it says that the UPS is service currently stopped. I am not sure whether this is relavent to my problem

There are several ways of fixing this depending on what Operating System you are running.. if you can add some extra notes telling us what OS you have then I can help you

The UPS service is not causing any problems. As a matter of fact it should be off, unless you have one. You also could be out of disk space, or running low, and that can cause a problem with standby. If you can get into safe mode then you can turn those features off and see what happen then. Cheers.

UPS is Uninterruptible Power Supply (in other words a battery pack!), used sometimes to keep things going during a power failure, mostly in commercial situations. Doubt if that's anything to do with it.

Personally, I've disabled all the power management options on mine, nothing but a pain in the ar*e. Mine's either on or off.

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
