Tennis or one of the many sports that use a racket
Golf
Swimming
Rock Climbing
Biking, either road biking or mountain biking
For tennis, golf, or swimming, sign him up for a couple of lessons and see how he likes it.
For rock climbing, most cities have rock gyms that teach you the basics for free and let you rent the harnesses and shoes; if he really likes it, most gyms also have youth teams and offer guides for outdoor climbing.
For biking, either see if you can rent a GOOD mountain bike and try it out, or buy an inexpensive bike at a sporting goods store, if he decides to get more serious, you can upgrade later.

Go for wakeboarding. It is like waterskiing but on a board like a snowboard and you make jumps over the wake of the boat. Within about a year he should be pulling spins and inverts. It is a very good aerobic and cardio vascular exercise.
Google wakeboarding to find a local club where equipment can be rented initialy then if he enjoys it then you could invest in a board.

Try soccer or basketball. Ask him what he would prefer, and the sports would vary where you live, so research the internet or phone book to see what kind of sports clubs they have. In the summer time he could do a all sports camp to give experience to all of them, and to see what he would like best. Also if you live near rivers, you can bond with him with fishing

Horse riding? Great excercise, lots of different activities and sports you can do once you've learnt how, and in a couple of years time he'll love being surrounded by 50 girls to every boy!

Chess, you would need to find out if his school had a chess club if not maybe start one. Check the internet for chess tournaments and how to get a ranking. If that feels too brainy then maybe check out Bowling leagues at the nearest bowling center.

Badmington is cheap, golf is not.Table tennis, 10 pin bowling.
Whatever he does try to get him to compete against others, it gives sport a meaning.

Let the lad decide. If he doesn't want to do a sport, let him do what he wants. Christ. I can't believe that you are asking a bunch of random strangers instead of your son.
