The Syro-Malabar Church was known as the Church of the St.Thomas Christians until the 18th century because it was founded by St Thomas, one of the apostles of Jesus Christ. St.Thomas came to India in 52 A.D. He died as a Martyr in a place called Mylapore in the present town of Chennai (Madras). His tomb is still venerated there.

According to the best record, an angry pagan priest drove a spear through his body while he knelt in prayer. Unfortunately, Portuguese adventurers destroyed precious documents that might have shed light on Thomas' history. The Portuguese thought that the Christians of Malabar were heretics. And so the writings of Christians who have an ancient church named for Thomas and who can point to a tomb where he was buried, are lost forever.-

A.D 52 to Muziri, at malabar coast. Martyred in A.D 72 at Mylapore, in modern chennai. Before this he was on service for the king Gondophares who ruled North India, as a slave carpenter in A.D 40 being sold by master Jesus when Abbanes, an Indian merchant was looking for a carpenter for his king. Because of the threats of invasions, he had to move to south through sea route at A.D 52 and thus Mar Thoma churches got established in 8 places in malabar coastal area.
