What actually you mean by software firm owner?
To save money, you must have a good survey of the market you are dealing with and how much penetration do you have. Engage employees as per strict requirements and you have to work very hard on your own because it is you to set the examples to your employees. As you have a good ground on the business gradually increase staffs in contract service and add or delete as per your requirements.

Why not induce increased sales? With additional income you could provide incentives for your staff to retain them. Balances can be saved.
