If you know someone's IP address you could check if he/she is online -- is this possible and preventable?

Yes, but it doesn't block it by default. In the Windows Firewall dialogue box, click the Advanced button. Click the ICMP button. Un-check the "Allow incoming echo request" option. Click OK all the way out. In a domain environment it is not possible to disable ping.

I don´t use windows but it´s a very basic feature. A ping only works if the computer receiving it replies, so if you disable the reply the ping will just do nothing.

i was using ms firewall it didnt block pinging , other firewall such as norton can block pinging but not IP'ing your location .
