I often discuss this topic with a British coworker. America has a population of 300 million, the third most populated nation on Earth (even though its only 5% of the total population). For comparison, the UK only has 60mil. First of all, whenever you get a large sample, you get a greater number of social outliers. By outliers, I am referring to individuals who have a difficult time adjusting to the social norm, and more likely to become violent.

Now, let's compare America to other largely populated nations. China is a communist, largely ethnically homogenous nation with an obviously state controlled media. If the media is controlled by the state, violence is probably downplayed when compared to a free media. Indian and Brazil, while ethnically very diverse, are also developing nations where news is not broadcast on a world scale. US news is international news, whenever a significant event happens in the US, the entire world knows of it. The everyday violence of Brazil and India are not international news. Indonesia, while having of 233mil, is also not important on a global news front.
The US is interesting because it is developed, and because it attempts to portray itself as a moral example for the world. The US is a global leader, and attempts to portray itself as a moral, just nation.
Violence occurs everyday in every nation. Large, developing nations have at least as much violence as the US. There is just less media interest in the violence of those nations.

If you look at history you will see that Americans are no more violent than people in other countries/regions. Some examples:Rome, Germany, Russia and most of all European countries. Jews, Africans, North,Central and South American Indians, Japan,Korea, and most of the near/far Eastern Asia, Iraq etc.
The United States was founded on violence by the violent Christians. But it is said that most of the violent peoples are traditional meat eaters.

Violence is pretty much a way of life for most nations. Some of this could be attributed to the basic need to kill in order to live. Basically, if one wishes to eat, one must kill something, animal or vegetable or both. The primary religion in the West is Christianity, a religion that is centered on ritual murder, or the ritual sacrifice of one man to gain forgiveness for all sin. I would have to say that Americans are no more or less violent than most people in the world, but there is definitely violence.

Well, first of all the new RAP and HIP-HOP,I believe.Kids,by listening to...let's say 50cent think that he is a real gangster and he shoots people and stuff like that there.Eminem has a videoclip where he is a serial killer and a maniac, and my friend Alex thinks that he really is a killer and S#|T like that. And think of it...he's 12 years old.
The next reason is that Americans like very much Restling...that by the way is a stupid imitation...they don't even hit eachother.
The next reason is because americans love money and will do anything to get their filthy hands on money...like saying kill a person for their money.
And because the americans have so much cellebrities.Fanatics kill celebreties, like they killed John Lennon(the famous member of the Beatles). The man who killed him was an american. That can happen to anyone.
I hope that americans will be more piecefull...like romanians are.

Nice job on that question! Americans are no more or less violent than people anywhere else around the world. Don't you ever see or hear world news? There will always be those who give and those that take ... it's the ones who take that do the violence. It's human nature!

Some would say it is due to our Wild West days, when the gun was teh answer for everything.

Others would say that the immigrants that came into this country brought with themtheir own violent traditions (like those associated with the Mafia)

Still others feel that there is a pervasiviness in the culture to "settle things like a man" through fighting, rather than reason

Oh I could tell you why, but I would be condemned for speaking freely (in the land of the free USA) But screw it! Im in the USA and I like this question, and will answer it as to MY opinion.
RACE! Blacks and Mexicans. They are destroying this country. When you see a News story about a robbery or almost any crime, 99% of the time, it is a Black or a Hispanic person that committed the crime.
Our Prisons are filled with those races only because Those Races suck!! Sure there are other Races in prison, but 99% are blacks or Hispanic.
De-De-De!! (Carlos Mencia term)

VIOLENT is the correct word for your question , not violence.

Are you from America?

Perhaps you better do some studying.........of the word.

Countries at war

India/ Pakistan
Iran/ THE WORLD
Afghanistan/Bin Laden
Iraq/Sadam,Iran
Syria,Palestine
Africa/their own people
just to name of few in turmoil

I find your question offensive or just plain uninformed (STUPID)

Pick another country to vent on!

proud to be an AMERICAN!

Yes we do have violence in our country, but, let me tell you...........in times of tragedy each and everyone of us is on the same page. From the highest to the lowest on the list, including those prone to violence in the prisons..........
Don't mess with our country

because americans are really self absorbed, if someone wants to poke or make fun of the americans and they do that the americans beat you up. They take everything so seriously

Actually - I would rather you provide facts supporting that American's are more violent than other people which is what your question seems to imply.

Good Luck with that!!!
