I just found out that I wasmixed Domincan 6 months ago. My dad doesn't embrace his Dominican roots because he says to white people he'll just be another Black person anyway . I feel like I don't know my culture and I feel that I'm missing out on something big. What can I do to get closer to my culture?

Why don't you visit the Domincan Republic one day? that would really enable you to find out more about your culture and family history.

Use the Internet to connect with other people from your culture. Look up Dominca and all of it's history. Learn as much as possible, and meet people from that place. I'm sure Myspace will have Dominicans on it.

Your father must have his reasons for this attitude but it should not hold you back from exploring your background. There is lots to read on Dominican history, Dominican websites, Dominican Govenment websites to explore. Start with your library. Perhaps one day you can go to the Dominican Republic and visit. Be proud of your history and where you came from it is who you are.

Perhaps there are still members of your family in the Dominican Republic that you may be able to contact. If you could at least get that information from your father as to whom to contact, perhaps you could arrange a visit and meet the half of your family that you don't know.
