Hookers don't get any of my respect, let alone my tax dollars for protection.

Most prostitution is done via mobile phones and the internet these days - street prostitution is generally only done by the most marginal women in this industry, the drug addicted, abused, with chaotic lives.
Legalising brothels and ensuring health checks etc will do nothing to protect such women - the other problems with their lives will prevent them being organised enough to work in a regular routine way with adequate protection. They will still be on the streets, marginalised in our society and possibly at greater danger, since a higher proportion of their clients would be those who would wish to harm them.
I'm not saying that legal brothels, health checks, registration and taxation would not be a step forward - just don't get carried away with the notion that these would offer any protection to some of the most abused and helpless members of our society.

Hello,
This is an extremely difficult subject area, why? because it throws up so many moral & ethical dilemmas for everyone. Everyone has an opinion on this topic some more foregiving than others, some very harsh and unforgiving.
**In my opinion, men of all ages will always have the itch of the sexual desire (or lust, or frustrated sexual feelings) to try & sort out, one way or another.
And whilst there are women who have become addicts (hard drugs & with drug habits) & who have been the victims of sexual abuse (in their past) there are always sadly going to be prostitutes & street walkers. Laws or no laws!
**The best you can say is that perhaps if the laws were to be changed here in the UK and brothels were legalised. It might be possible to control the amount & flow of drug use, control the inevitable health related problems (condoms & health checks) and also control & check the punters too.
The best one can say is that perhaps legalising brothels with cut out the actual pimps??
**I think after the recent murders of the five prostitutes in the Ipswich area here in the UK, hopefully the public might begin to see sex works as human beings as well as prostitutes.
YES! prostitutes they may be, drug addicts they may be but they were also someone's daugther or child too! They didnt deserve to be murdered just because of the nature of their employment in my opinion.

This assumes you are willing to let them "work" in the first place. Everyone deserves more protection, but why distinguish "women who are working on the streets"? You should define your objectives and assumptions. There are too many factors to consider before anyone can give you a valid answer.

I've always said there are so many other things people could do rather than go in to prostitution - but saying that I'm not in their position and have no right to judge. I do think more needs to be done to protect them - not only from pshyco killers but also from being taken advantage of by organised gangs etc.

Yes definitely.
I agree completely with the answer that said we should follow the lead of Amsterdam (and Nevada in the US) and legalise, license and tax prostitution to help take most of these vulnerable young ladies of the streets.
(Oh and I've signed the petition)!

Look, we can't protect everyone from themselves. If we did there'd be no personal freedom. The bottom of the pit of degradation for a man is probably to end up in prison and lose his freedom. For a woman you can go one step lower and allow yourself to be degraded by others for money. My heart goes out to anyone who has sunk this low - there but for luck go I or any other woman, who grew up believing she was trash. But let's not dignify it by pretending it's acceptable work, calling it the "sex industry" and applying health and safety regulations to it. It's a filthy, degrading but addictive way to earn money fast. Then you have to get high or drunk so you can brace yourself to go out and do it again.

While working women are frequently abused and murdered, it's a risk they take when they choose their occupation. They willingly go into extremely high risk and dangerous situations by choice! How do you protect someone who doesn't try to protect themselves?

absolutely. It is very sad that street prostitution exists. In the Netherlands where prostitution is legal and policed (there are all sorts of hygene and work practice standards), there's much less street prostitution. There is even a prostitute's labour union!

While I agree they are entitled to protection, it is a known hazard of their chosen profession, therefore they should be aware of the hazards, provide themselves with some kind of protection, if they expect the police to provide protection then declare ALL earnings and pay tax as do the majority of professionals which would then make them eligible to request this protection. NON tax payers, in my opinion, should not expect a given right to expect other taxpayers money to be used to provide them with free services

No, i think that this proffesion should be completely done away with. because its very existance reflcts a Nation who is only conscerned about their own daughters safety, not the safety of the daughters of the whole of britania. We are all born innocent babes, and we all become guilty adults. If we are ever going to learn to grow, we have to get rid of the things that stunt our grothe. and prostitution is one of them. These girls must be rescued fom this terrable situation.
