I personally think that happiness is easiest to define as the opposite of hardship. When things are difficult, we all want something to work towards that will be less frustrating and tiring than life is at that moment.

In defining happiness in such a way, one possible consequence is that a person can only really be as happy as they are unhappy. I've always thought you can only truely appreciate how "good" something is by experiencing the opposite of it. Perhaps this explains why when people reach their goal in life of what is happy or successful they remain unsatisfied. As individuals we then move on to wanting more and more...and even if we are seemingly wealthy we may not be happy. On the other hand people may be relatively more happy with less or even with living in poverty because their is more room for improvement, and thus more feelings of being happy. There are probably situations that this might not apply as much as my life, but in general it seems to work for me...

Good question. The Constitution gives us the right to pursue happiness, but a lot of people are not sure what it is. I suspect it is a feeling of satisfaction that life is good for you, that you have reached your utmost goals, and are content that the rest will come in time.
