the performance depends on the memory speed & timing, for instance if you compare 1gb (pc3200 2,2,2,5 CR1) to 2gb (pc2700 2.5,3,3,6 CR2) the 1gb would be faster and give better performance then the 2gb but you would also have less ram to run programs simultaneously. If you add duel channel into the mix this would also have an impact on performance.

your 4 x 512MB DIMMS is much faster, since the total would be 2GB compare with 1 x 1GB. Higher capacity add more speed on the system itself.

Don't you mean 1GB vs 2-512GB? In any scenario, 2GB is always better than 1.....

If you have a dual channel motherboard, then running a chip in each channel, in dual channel mode results in the greatest memory bandwidth.

Dual channel motherboards typically have 4 DIMM slots, staggered. 0,2 and 1,3 which represent the channels.
In this case, you put a 512 in slots 0 and 2.

there is unmarried, twin, triple, and "flex" channel memory configuration you elect ddr3 for triple. you ought to have the comparable twin channel overall performance from 2 x 2GB as 4 x 1GB. With the two x 2GB you ought to have room for upgrading in case you later pass sixty 4 bit working gadget. Intel shows a thank you to setup twin channel - etc.

It should be the second option BUT since there are four different cards then it also depends on your cpu's FSB frequency. FSB= front side bus. higher the fequency faster transaction between processor and RAM.

So check out your processors FSB. If its somethin like 800 or higher MHz.. then the second option
