The key to BMW models is the first number is the series and the next two numbers is the engine displacement in liters. (though not followed as religiously by BMW lately). Most people say the first number as a single digit and the next two combined. This tells some one the type of car you have. 1xx is a 1 series 3xx is the 3 series 5xx is the 5 series 6xx is the 6 series 7xx is the 7 series. The next two numbers provide the size of your engine. 35 is the 3.5 liter 40 is the 4.0 liter 50 is the 5.0 liter So a 540 would be pronounced a five forty and is a 5 series BMW with a 4.0 liter engine. We won't go into the X, M, c, s, i, x or other letters unless we need to. Hope this helps.

I live In Aus, so I call it a BMW Two Double O Two, and I think they are sexy! I'd love one of them. I dont believe there is a right and a wrong way, but I prefer to say Three One Eight, but in the case of the 740iL, and 540i, I say Seven Forty and Five Forty. Off topic, but my dream BMW is a E34 535i in Gunmetal grey, with grey leather, BMW Msport wheels and badges and Msport upgrades.

it can be pronounced either way... I've always said it poin-set-a, but i guess it depends how you were taught!
