A few years ago i used to get a bus to work, and there was a guy who used to be there every morning. He was in his forties, nice guy, kind of shy - i think he liked having someone to talk to. I never knew his name or where he lived, but we'd chat a little and i knew he lived alone. One day at Christmas I was complaining about the hassle of Christmas shopping and he just said "I'm lucky. I don't have anyone to buy presents for." I thought it was the saddest thing ever and i've never forgotten it. I moved away soon after and never saw him again, but I keep thinking I should have done something for him. What would you have done?

There is nothing you can do. I belive everyone has a destiny before they are born. Maybe he has already got something new in his life, yet made you realise how important your relationships are to you. Maybe thats one of his purposes. you just dont know. I dont know what i would of done. I would of said something nice to him probably. but thats all.

I would have done exactly the same as you and probably 99% percent of the population would have done the same.
Has something in your own life triggered these feelings of remorse? If so forget it and get on with living in the knowledge that you are a caring person with feelings for people less fortunate than yourself.
Next year think about doing voluntary work for the homeless..very rewarding.
PS Always remember there are some dodgy characters about and bear in mind not to drag someone in off the street because you feel sorry for them. Get to know them first.

I would like to say I would have invited him round for Christmas but without meeting him I can't say for sure that I would have.
In any event in all honesty I would have bought him a wee present, a pair of socks and some chocolates or something and a wee card.

Indeed so sad. I would have prolly done nothing because most of us, as you, really do not think it might have made a difference to do something special for someone who is alone, especially a person we do not really know.
Maybe your story will awaken all of us to be more sensitive and ready to do for those whom we might not know very well.
Thanks for sharing.

Happy Christmas to all, especially those who will be alone. I will send up a special thought for you this year. Maybe we all will.

Its really nice that u think like that, u are obviously very caring, but dont feel guilty its a sad fact that there are many people that dont have anyone, he may meet someone special in the future.
Im a care worker and always feel bad if i dont work xmas day cos i know there are so many patients that need care and dont have family over xmas.
Dont feel bad u probably helped him more than you know by befriending him.

Nothing! Don't you think buying him a gift/ sending him a card if you feel sorry for him is a wee bit patronising? Maybe he chose that particular lifestyle & wanted to spend Christmas alone??

I would like to think I would have invited him for Christmas Dinner and would have bought him a small present, provided that I wasn't on my own.
