Presumably you are talking about the 'nuclear' family with Mum, dad, Sally, Johnney and Blob the dog?

As an arrangement, its not been around so very long. Less than 200 years ago and the 'family' would have included relations you probably only see from time to time. Those aunts, uncles, grandparents would have been interdependant as well. You would likely have spent as much time with them as with your parents.

Did it work as a system? Well there wasnt much else you could do if it didnt so people made it work.

Were they happy? Who can really tell?

Does the nuclear family work?

With a divorce rate touching 50% then I dont think we can call it a great success can we.

Are they happy? They could be. People dont know how to be anymore

America is a country made up of more than 200 million people, so you can expect much diversity in attitudes towards family.

As mentioned, divorce rate is about 40 to 50 per cent. A significant number of people are alone and not living as a family.
