Did you know...

De fragmenting has very little performance benefit unless you typically create and delete very large files. The only real reason to do this is to create contiguous file space at the end of a volume for creating and manipulating video.

In the past, fragmentation was important because disk drives had virtually no on-board cache , file numbers and disk capacity were much lower, and algorithms used to store and retrieve data were ancient.

In Windows today, thousands of disk accesses are required to get most applications running. Windows also does not re-write files in place when they are modified, instead it uses a moving high water mark to relocate the file to an area never written if possible.

Believe it or not, constant use of defrag can worsen the performance of your system. It makes more sense today to have your data random all over the disk surface, than in one place. Disk drivers work off a multiple request queue's, and while the heads are travelling out looking for one piece of data, they will satisfy other read/write requests on the way. Contiguity of files is not that important anymore.

Defraging a volume also decreases the chances of you ever recovering a file you have deleted by emptying the recycle bin...

Just some 2 cents.
