well, without more details it's hard to say, but some common reasons are:

viruses/spyware/malware - run any antivirus software you have (Norton, Ad-Aware, Spybot, AVGFree, MacAfee, etc). This is a very likely cause if it slows down mostly on web sites. If you don't have any of this kind of software, GET IT. Ad-Aware, Spybot, and AVGFree are all free, at least for the basic version, and Norton has some good deals for the holidays.....

Fragmentation/full hard drive - If your hard drive is too full, it can slow your computer down. Open "My Computer" and check how full your C Drive is. If you right-click it and go to properties or go to Programs>Accessories>System Tools in the start menu, you can defragment the drive, which may help.

Software your computer can't handle - If your computer is older and you have installed new software that runs in the background, particularly Anti-virus software of things that update automatically online, you may experience some slowing, since your computer doesn't have the resources to run everything at once. If the slowdown happened when you added new software, either remove it, upgrade your computer, or live with it if you must.

System software problems - If some data in the operating system has become lost or corrupted, you may get hangups while it tries to cope. If you get error messages with your slowdowns, this could be a cause (especially if the messages reference the system or are particularly cryptic). If nothing else seems to work, it may be worth it to re-install the system, which can also stop some unneeded background programs from running anymore. This is obviously a cumbersome option, so only do it if you have to, but it may help

Overheating - This is not very likely, but check the vents on your computer to see if they are blocked or clogged (especially if you have a dog or cat that sheds a lot). If the computer can't cool itself enough, it may slow down to prevent damage, so check this. If they are clogged, wipe or blow out the vents. Canisters of compressed air are good for this, as they will help blow excess dust out of the computer as well as off the fans and vents so that they don't clog up as soon. (but if you have dust allergies, beware. If you haven't done this in a while it can get ugly)

Component failure - It's also possible that some component in your computer is failing, although I couldn't tell you what without a lot more detailed information. If nothing else works, take it in to get it checked.

I hope something here helps. I tried to put stuff in order from most likely to least likely. Of course there are other possibilities, but these are the most common ones I could think of at 4:00 in the morning. Good luck

Mioght not be your machine, could just be the state of the 'net. However, run a good anti-virus like AVG or Avast! and anti-spyware such as Ad-Aware SE and/or SpyBot Search & Destroy, all free to download. Once you've installed 'em get them updated before running them, preferably in Safe Mode (continually tap F8 while you're booting).

Also do a disk cleanup and defrag (in All Programs - Accessories - System Tools)

These will cause no harm, are easy to do and can only do good.

By the way, get rid of any software you don't use, set your dekstop to blank and kill your screensaver - graphics use a lot of resources.

Hope that helps.

Clean your system out....

For Spyware - Use Ad-aware SE or Spybot: Search and destroy (or both) They can be found at http://www.download.com

For viruses - Make sure that your anti-virus is up to date and run a full system scan.

Start-up - Clear anything out of startup that is not needed (anything other than your antivirus, and firewall is not needed) You can accomplish this by going to start --> run --> Type in "msconfig" and press enter. Then click on the startup tab and uncheck all entries that are not your antivirus or your firewall.

Download TuneUp Utilities 2007 *Just released* from http://www.tune-up.com There are many tools included in this software to tweak your windows experience.

Stop using IE. Download Mozilla Firefox 2 from http://www.mozilla.com It will help you prevent many of your problems from occurring in the first place.

your pc can slow down for a number of reasons

1. heavy internet usage slows down broadband
2. lots of programs running at the same time.
3. virus
4. spyware.

First of all clean out all your temp files and cookies. use ccleaner from
http://www.ccleaner.com/

Then clear all programs you are not using by
right clicking on the icons at the bottom right hand side of the toolbar and closing them

Run a virus and spyware checker.

Try defragmenting your hard drive.

Right click on the explorer button> properties> delete cookies> delete all files> go to advance mode? select default settings> go down and tick the 'Use TLS 1.0". Try again it may help. Check off auto updates if you have such, check whether your antivirus is monitoring the connection, if so check off.
Go to search and search for temporary files, select all delete.

as a self taught p.c engineer i have seen this problem on so many occasions and nine times out of ten its due to spyware or some other form of malware
it is so important that you have adequate security installed on your p.c while on-line,i still have problems when online and i thought i had enough security so if someone with minimal security goes online i could see how quick they could get infected
installing at least 3 anti-spyware programs should keep you free of spyware and your p.c running pretty well ok
use these programs for spyware eradication and protection
1)spybot search+destroy...http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html
2)adaware personal...http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10045910.html?part=dl-ad-aware&subj=dl&tag=top5
3)ewido anti-spyware...http://www.ewido.net/en/
these will keep your p.c free of spyware and this program should keep you free of viruses
1)avast 4.7...http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
finally you should download a good clean-up tool to clear your p.c of invalid files and temp files,a good program for this is advanced windowscare personal..http://iobit.com/AdvancedWindowsCarePersonal/download.htm
this should speed up your p.c and also your internet speed, also remember to delete your cookies, internet history, and temp internet files at least once a week
good luck
