If you are running windows, check to see if you are running hibernate or standby mode. Also check your screen saver, it maybe automatically requiring your password/ login because you have it set to ask upon start up.

Go to control pannel and click on display properties. Click screen saver and unclick password protect. Also click on Power in the same tab. You will get a new screen; make sure hibernate and standby are set to never. If you want any of these programs then decide how long it should wait before it give up on you and powers down.

You can have one or the other running. Hibernate is good for power and it will turn everything beside the monitor off and you can resume where you left off. Standby is quicker starting up but it doesn't turn the machine off entirely. Both save your setting as they are when you stopped.

Either way pick a reasonable time between how long it normally takes you to come back and when you probably aren't coming back. Make sure you set your monitor to turn off after the same time.

Or you could just turn off the machine when you walk away.

Change your screen saver password settings. Right click on your desktop, go to the screen saver tab and increase the "wait" time and maybe deactivate the check box beside it "on resume, password protect"

That should do the trick.
