You mourn someone close...someone you know and will miss eternally...right? You pay your respects to those that you didn't know well, someone you know the parents of...you pay your respects to someone you were aware of but didnt actually know as such. So if you're crying your either crying due to the emotional strain of the situation...because you know the persons relatives....because you see others crying....essentially your not crying for them....thus you're not mourning you're paying your respects right?

Right on.Yes you mourn for someone that was close to you whether it be a friend, lover or family or pet even.Paying your respect is the fact that you knew them or there family and just being there is a sign of respect.ezzenow

It`s all down to the individual`s inner feelings & emotions & personal circumstances and by the way, why are you asking the same question twice but using slightly different terms & expressions?

A valid question would be:

Can you mourn without paying your respects & can you pay your respects without mourning?

Personally, I don`t think you can mourn without paying your respects because the two are inextricably linked but I think that you can pay your respects without mourning when you attend the funeral of someone you didn`t really know intimately or personally but you still feel that you have to put up an appearance regardless, purely and simply out of respect, duty & empathy for the deceased`s friends & relatives.

You are exactly right. You've caught the nuances of the two ways of acknowledging death. Another reason someone could cry at the death of a person that they didn't know well is it could trigger feelings about a personal loss. Perhaps someone in your own family was died or is dying. Your tears could be actaully for them and for your feelings of loss.

If you show emotion such as crying you could be mourning.Perhaps you are just having empathy or sympathy for the loss.
