is the symbol of the answer always supposed to be the same as the larger number in the equation?

say-

-90 + +40=

90-40= -50

-75 + +25=

75-25= -50

-30 + +15=

30-15= -15

if in the examples i wrote out the equations incorrectly but i get the correct answer anyways,why does it matter? the only reason i write them down like so is because it's easier for me to solve the equation that way.

Yes this is a good rationale for two term questions. If you want to use this idea then you will have to split up larger term questions into managable bites.

yes, the symbol is suppoesed to be the same as the larger no. but in your examples, though your answer is correct, the second step is wrong, i.e, 90-40, 75-25, 30-15 as you cant change the signs in the question. it's better if you do this step somewhere in a rough page instead of doing it with the sum
One more thing- -1>-2 ,i.e, any "smaller looking" negative no. is always greater than the other "larger looking" negative no. eg.
6-(-8)=6+8=14 , here 6 is greater than -8, so dont get confused

because according to the number line which goes like this
Look at it carefully from 0 and you can extend it from both sides.
....-10 , -9 , -8 , -7 , -6 , -5 , -4 , -3 , -2 , -1 , 0 , 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9.....
if you add 5 to -5,as 5 is positive you go 5 steps to the positive side from -5 which ends at 0.
try making a bigger number line and and check it your self.

If by larger number in the equation - you mean larger value i.e. 2 is 'larger' than -3,

2 + (-3) = -1

I think you mean ABSOLUTE value of the numbers, which would mean that -3 is bigger than 2. In that case it seems true.

yes, whenever u do addition and subtraction, the sign has to be same as that of larger number,,the equations return by u above are wrong(not all, but some)

whenever u happen to see a question where u have to add/subtract 2 numbers with different signs...then ,,,,,u only need to do subtraction only and the answer will have the sign of the larger number.

I believe its true only when it comes to addition.
Anyway try not to use the word number. Its very vague. In math we have all kinds of numbers. Real and Complex numbers. Real number consist of Integers, Natural, Rational and Irrational numbers. Juz fyi...
