I prefer James Patterson. The suspense is always in the air, it's hard to put down his books once you have started, I usually finish it in a day. Karin Slaughter and John Sandford should not be missed, very, very suspensful writing and great characters.

I can't relate to crime novels with male protaganists and got tired of Agatha Christie..so I started reading Susan Grafton, since she had a female Private Investigator (California PI), then Sara Paretsky (Chicago female PI) , next Patricia Cornwell (Virginia female medical examiner), but then I found out about Marsha Muller (San Francisco female PI), and she had written her novels way before any of the other women...I like her the best. Reason? I have to like the main character, and I like hers the best of any I've read.
I also enjoy Nevada Barr (female national park ranger), Dana Stabenow (Alaska female PI), J.A. Jance (Arizona female sheriff), and Margaret Maron (North Carolina female judge).

Ed McBain and the 87th Precinct novels. His books are factual, funny, and horrific. From fall down laughter to gasping for breath.
Dashell Hammett: The Thin Man and the Maltese Falcon. A brilliant writer. Created the tough guy private eye with Sam Spade.

Definitely James Patterson. I love his Alex Cross series. I also like Iris Johansen, she's got a great series about a forensic sculptor Eve Duncan.
