you need to buy a new speedo cable, if you check the engine end of it, it should be square, you will probably find, given the age of the car that the end has started to round off, resulting in the cable only being intermittantly rotated.

I had the same problem with my car. It was at first a shaky speedo needle then after I took the dash out to replace some light bulbs the speedo would only work intermittently then gave up all together. It turned out to be the top of the cable had broken, and tough the cable was still spinning fine it would not 'snap'/clip into the back of the dash.
Lucky for me all I had to do was buy the top half of the speedo cable and it simply ran through the bulkhead and screwed into the other half just inside the engine bay! Just before you replace carefully note where the cable runs! I thought I remembered correctly but it took me a while to figure out it's correct route.

Yep - probably the speedo cable. You'll probably need to get it from a dealership (I just put one in my car it cost $45 CAD for the part) I doubt the cost varies all that much from car to car, as they all really work the same way. One end plugs into the transmission or differential and the other to the back of the speedo.
It's pretty easy to fix (in most cars), but getting at the back of the insturment cluster can be a pain. If you do it yourself, be sure to clean out the connections (air duster works well) and lube the connections with white grease. Other than that, the cable pretty much clicks into the back of the speedo, routes into the engine compartement and plugs into the tranny.

Take it to a storage and ask them to ascertain the wiring loom. This were given right here about to my lady buddy's clio 02 and its because fairly some the wires were worn (a undemanding fault apparently with those Clios).

I'd start by making sure the cable is tightly connected on both ends.
