He (Leonard) finds out in the end (the beggining), that he has already killed the man responsible for breaking into his house, attacking his wife and smashing him over the head. He doesn't want to accept though that he is being used by Teddy to kill others (drug dealers like the guy they take to the house at the end of the film), just so Teddy can make money on the side and to make Leonard happy and give him a purpose because he can't remember killing the guy who really did it. So he (leonard) decides to give himself information that would push him towards killing Teddy, which he eventually does (at the begging of the film), although Teddy is completely innocent of the crimes against him.

Answerer Gareth W has it right up to a point. Leonard has previously killed his wife's killer but he does not remember doing so and after Teddy figures this out he manipulates Leonard into believing his (Teddy's) nemesis is the guy who killed his wife and hit him in the head; however, Leonard is not giving himself clues to kill Teddy...those are all supplied by Natalie for getting revenge on Teddy for having Leonard kill her boyfriend.
The bottom line, and the reason for all the scenes showing the guy from Leonard's past who had no long-term memory that Leonard had denied the claim for when he was a claims agent because he thought the guy was faking is because (who obviously isn't because his wife ends up dying because of the medication issues because she believed Leonard's assessment that her husband did have more memory than he did) Leonard himself becomes like that guy and he is not faking either...he has no short-term memory either, therefore the irony and poetic justice of the entire story.

Gareth is absolutely right! That's why at the end (really the beginning) he says, "you could be my John G", and he writes down the plate numbers for Teddy's car. He knows he'll eventually find out and kill Teddy.
