People are more aware of things than they used to be.Things like secure internet sites looking for the lock icon in the corner of the screen.Locking your car doors, don't be in certain locations by yourself just alot more aware of dangers.
Granted they still happen you can have a perfect driving record and die in 25 minutes from now pulling out of the drive way.

I think that depends on how far back you mean when you say "used to be".
While we might have things like antibiotics, most people don't realize that taking too much of them actually endangers their health!
We now have "preventative" measures, but like mammograms expose you to cancer causing radiation which increases your risk of cancer at a frightening rate!
I think figuring out what is "safer" would take some research! We have seatbelts, now that help, but people didn't drive as much as now so does that prevent less overall deaths compared to a former time if there are ever increasing amounts of people and who are driving more than ever?
I think knowledge is the "safety feature" of all ages and that's always existed so I don't personally know if we are living in "safer" times, or if its just a common marketing scheme to get our attention and our money.
This might very well be a subjective question. LOL

There were tons of fires before the invention of the lightning rod.
There were tons of fires and houses burning down before electricity was used for lighting and people were using gas lanterns.
People haven't always had cell phones if they're car broke down where it may be dangerous to walk
Babies' cribs have been made safer. Babies used to strangle when their heads went between the bars.
Car dashboards are no longer metal (which makes them safer if someone hits their head on them)
Food handling is much better now that it used to be. Things used to be sold loose in barrels, where all kinds of people reached in and got their stuff. It is safer to have foods packaged.
Babies travel in car seats. They used to ride in little seats that just hooked over the back of the front seat. They'd ride in car beds that were just plopped onto the backseat of a car.
Toys are safer. Many of them used to be made of tin.

The house I live in was once heated by a coal burning stove that the owner had to fill every morning, and possibly every evening, too. Getting a gas burner took a lot of labor out of keeping the house warm. That is only one of myriad advances that keep life easier, and us lazier.

We no longer live in constant fear of being nuclear bombed by the Soviet Union. In school they used to make us do air-raid attack drills regularly during the 1960s.
