on a world scale it would have to be WW11. some would argue about this- Europeans in particular and Brits most of all but i do think American intervention on the Allied front was pivotal in saving or bolstering the British war effort. and that's it- Vietnam-oops, Korea-oops, the CIA backed and funded wars in Africa and central America-oops, the cold war- i mean who actually won this? and now Iraq- a major debacle if ever. without being anti anything the American prowess at war is abysmal- despite the largest single war machine on earth. credit is given to the amazing response by American troops during the tsunami relief operation, they had troops and relief on the ground while Europeans where finishing the foie gras in Brussels. can't say the same for Katrina though- although that has more to do with political ineptitude.

You have to look past, "Was it worthwhile for us?" and ask yourself "Was it worthwhile for the people of the nation on which the war is being waged. In nearly every account in history, the answer is yes. The current war will ultimately be beneficial for the Iraqi and Afghani people, no matter what the outcome.

The current war on terror, of which Iraq is now the central front.
I'm sure if it was 1942 a visionless person like yourself would be calling WW2 a "debacle" too.

Actually, in wwII it is arguable whether Nazi-Germany imperialism was that much worse than what actually happened after the dust settled.
The US fought not for Europe, but for France and Britain. True, other countries suffered too, but none were about to lose as much as those two countries. It would've been impossible for Nazi-Germany to hold on all its occupied land, and it would've collapsed all on its own, much earlier than the USSR.
