Well I have met some weird & wonderful people who laugh at situations or jokes that aren`t remotely funny.
Is that better do you think?
Or is it purely based on nervousness?
And what makes you so sure laughter doesn`t benefit us in any way?!?
Are you a qualified psychoanalyst or something?
To comment on your question, yes I do think it does benefit us because it tremendously helps relieve both tension & stress (not that we should ever have to feel either!) and it`s also a great way to communicate with our fellow human beings and to break the ice when you meet someone brand new or someone you fancy from a distance and finally get the chance to speak to, for example.
It`s so true that we all learn to laugh before we can talk because babies can spend quite a bit of time giggling, if you`ve ever noticed.
Laughter is the greatest cure against misery & depression and strongly suggests happiness, which is a feeling that we all want to experience throughout our lives.
P.S. Do animals laugh too? Besides hyenas & primates of course...

It's an involuntary reaction. It's a form of communication, we laughed before we could talk. That's obvious if you ever have been around babies. Laughter is a social behavior, we do it to make other people feel better. It's also indicated nervousness. We really don't do it because we think it's funny, laughter is acutally not really connected to humor, if you ever notice, you laugh mostly when your around other people. It's really nothing more than a form of communication. Laughing is also know to release endorphines which make you feel good, ease pain you know everything endophines do, kinda like cliff jumping for adreniline, but in a way safer way.

I think you will find that in fact laughter does have benefits for our health and wellbeing. In many countries they have laughing clubs because it makes the members feel better. Just have a look at the many articles you can Google.

A good laugh also burns calories.
And... there is some chemical involvement, too. Sadly, though, I can't remember the specifics to support my argument. Maybe it helps in the production or use of serotonin or dopamine or one of the other 'feel good' chemicals in the brain? I hope, though, that you don't discredit the idea. It's just been ages since that class.

I know this is a challenge to see if there is anyone left on earth who doesn't know that laughter is the best medicine bar none. So, sorry to jettison your little test, but the benefits are therefore beyond our comprehension.
As I always like to say, "A little seltzer down your pants."
