Depending upon the store, especially if the employees don't wear name-tags, it could be that you are dressed in the same fashion or style as either 1) the salespeople or 2) the line of the clothing around you.
However, even dressing well can help people make that mistake, since everyone believes that, because salespeople are in customer serivce, they have to look extra-presentable.
I also might consider the lack of a bag to be the primary indicator. No salesperson walks around with their bag while working, and to see a woman without one can trigger that association with people.
You could try carrying a small one with you, even if it holds nothing valuable besides tissues and pens. Also, going with a friend would help, since salespeople never work in pairs or converse the way friends do.

Its ok I had my kroger uniform on with out my name tag and some random guy came up to me askign questions. I was like um I have no idea I don't come here a lot, this was at a new walmart not to far from my work. and he was like well don't you work here and I just kind of looked at him and was like umm no. it was really random but what can you do? some people are just weird. try carrying a purse around then people will just think your a shopper. hope your problem gets better.

Try looking happy, dress well and look as though you want to help someone. You never find this kind of salesperson in a shopping mall.

i get mistaken sometimes and usually i give them a dirty look and ask "do i look like a sales woman to you?". sometimes they're just dumb. but i'm trying to be nicer.....you might pretend to look through clothes and look in the mirror see if it fits you...i do that sometimes when i want to avoid being rude so they'll realize that a sales woman wont usually look in the mirror and see if those clothes that you want to try on fits or not. actually now i'm trying to politely say "please ask the saleslady" when i get mistaken.

i imagine so, we are basically human, we also study from our blunders and easily a coward would not take possession of there blunders. see you later as someone isn't heavily damage and the guy who made the mistakes is prepared to do what ever is had to fix the mistakes. Then for sure, yet basically declaring sorry and walking faraway from the precedence left in the back of, then that's diverse and the answer is not any.

This has happened to me often. Consider this a gift. People find you warm and approachable. If you're able to help them out, you've been given an opportunity to do a good deed for the day!
