come visit Pa!
I live there and you can get them in most pet stores. Also, like some one before me said, you can find them in the woods, but this can be tricky and also not in the winter because they are hibernating....so if you want to find one you'll have to wait until the summer.

there are many different types of box turtles, so look them up and compare pricing and all that. Or impulse buy a type you fall in love with. as long as you got the right habitat set up and everything.

good luck!

ps i totally agree www.turtlesale.com kicks butt! i love it and they sell for good prices!

You should check the New Jersey laws to verify whether it is illegal to collect/sell box turtles in NJ or whether it is illegal to even own/keep one (that was legally acquired elsewhere).

If you can legally own one then try http://www.turtleforum.com/forum/upload/index.php?showforum=35 for postings of turtles for sale.

If you've never kept a land turtle in captivity then be aware that to properly house a land turtle in captivity takes much more than a small aquarium. Think about a 4 foot by 6 foot area with dirt, plants, and a water puddle, all enclosed in turtle proof sides (to keep it from escaping).

Finally, in order to address the issues of taking a breeding turtle out of the wild, be sure to verify that any turtle that you're considering is Captive Bred.

Sorry, but you shouldn't get one. They're illegal for a reason.

Box turtles spread disease, and if you someday decide to get rid of yours, it could cause an epidemic to your local turtle population.

They're also becoming relatively rare because their breeding method is inefficient. If you like them so much, you certainly wouldn't want to rob the turtle population of another breeder.

Also, turtles don't make very good pets. They are cute, but they don't give the affection that a dog or cat does. They also don't live as long in captivity.

Again, sorry. Maybe you should pick some other type of pet.

You can try the forums at http://www.turtleforums.com,or check with your local herpetological society about any nearby breeders expos.

Do your research first, however. Did you know, for example, that the Eastern box turtle needs about 70% humidity to be healthy in captivity? How do you plan on keeping it that high and still keeping the air fresh and clean?
