The size a movie takes on a disk depends on the quality and format of the movie. You would have seen 2.5 Hr Indian movie on a DVD. But some of the Hollywood movies come in 2 DVDs even when the total duration of the movie is 2 Hrs. What this means is that those Hollywood movies were made into quality digital files. Now-a-day you may be seeing 3 Bollywood movies coming in a sigle DVD, and you can make out the quality difference while you watch in the TV/computer screen.

Professional VCD quality takes 700MB Cd for 80 minutes. 4.5GB DVD can hold upto 1.5 Hrs of Professional Quality DVD video. The output of what is shot in consumer Camcorder, for example, is not of "professional quality".

You seem to have "3 Hrs movie" in a DVD which you want to back up. If this is true - what you need to know is this: you can either copy DVD to another DVD (of same capacity). Or, you can "Rip" the DVD into more space saving formats like DivX (search for "DVDRipper" and "Divx player" to know more on these). DivX is a file format that helps you compress/encode the video stream in to lesser size than the source material. 1.5 Hr movie in DivX format can fit in 700MB CD. This generally is a lot better than the CVD format, and nearly equal to the DVD quality.

So the answer is: The size of a movie file on disk depends on the quality of the movie, format of the file - among several other things.

see it depends on the format of the file in which a movie has been copied on a CD. Like if a Movie is in .dat format, it should take the space for whole movie around 1.5 to 2 GB.
