I am 25 years old, and have never had children. I am overweight and think that Mirena would be great as a more effictive form of birth control. My Nurse Practioner said it would be great, and sent me home with plenty of info about it. The problem is, the ONLY info that she gave me and that I can find is about women with children getting it. I have never had children, but would like some- probably w/i 5 years. Is Mirena not recommended for women who haven't given birth? If so-why?

I am currently on the pill, and I was told when you are overweight the effectiveness of the pill decreases drastically. I am in a committed relationship, and I want effective birth control, that will be reversable when the time is right.

1st off the uterus of a woman who is Nulli (not had children) is smaller than a woman who has had a child in the past. Personally I have not heard it recommended to Nulli women who do want children in the future. Usually its women who have made up their mind that they don't want children. The rate that the IUD causes infertility is higher in Nulli women doe to the IUD might perforate your uterus (if its to small)It may expel and cause some scarring in your uterus. Personally If you do want children I would not recommend the IUD for you but if your NP thinks its a good idea then ultimately its you and her decision

I have been given a mirena whilst my infant replaced into 7 weeks previous. It felt like a "pinch" once I had it placed, I even have gained fairly some weight, Im not sure if staying off paintings for 9 weeks had something to do with it or no longer. I didnt like mirena in the past each and every thing, for the 1st 3-4 months after having it I bled constanly, no longer heavy yet sufficient to be on my nerves. because then I even have stopped bleeding and it quite is magnificent. good success!!

I have the Mirena and love it. I have also had kids. The reason Drs recommend that you have at least one child first is.......a woman who has had a child has a larger uterus and less chance of expelling the IUD. If your nurse practitioner is recommending it for you I say go for it. There are woman out there who haven't had a child and gotten the Mirena and love it too.

Up to you but most GPs advise IUDs for women who have already had children, as you say. Perhaps you could consider going on the pill. Not all brands make you gain weight, although your GP or sexual health clinic will give you all sorts of advice and help with this.

I had the mirena and loved it but I've had 2 kids. the only reason they say its better if you've had kids is becuse it might wouldn't be as uncomfortable when they put it in. If you're real worried talk to your dr.
