Depends on you synth and what music format you want to record. You could just plug it in to the sound card mic or aux in and record with MS software. If your synth is midi compatible you could buy the midi cables (or some connect via USB) and record and edit multiple tracks in midi format.
I have "Cakewalk Music Creator" that also prints the notes you are playing and change it in to MP3 format for burning Cd's.
I started with the first version and it came with the midi cord to connect my old Casio to the game stick port on my sound card. 25.00 at best buy
