It is true, especially if you are refusing help. Every psychologist should review the limits of confidentiality at your first meeting, explaining dangerous to self and others, child abuse, and written releases of information (confidentiality laws vary from state to state).
If someone comes to me and says that they are thinking of hurting him or herself or someone else, I first remind them that they were very strong and very smart to recognize that something was wrong and seek help. I will attempt to deescalate the situation and try to help them in the least invasive way possible. If the person is still in crisis and still in danger, I may suggest that they go to the hospital. Voluntary hospitalization is always less traumatic than involuntary hospitalization. If they are still a danger and they refuse to go to the hospital, I may have to pursue involuntary hospitalization, which varies according to your state laws. In this state, that involves calling an Emergency Services number for an evaluation, getting the police involved, and obtaining a Temporary Detention Order. Sometimes, the patient is taken to the hospital in handcuffs. You can understand how scary that must be.
If they are a danger to a specific other person, I may call Emergency Services, the police, or even the person they are threatening.
I've only ever had one person involuntarily hospitalized in the 9 years I've been working in the mental health field and it has been my experience that once a person comes in and verbalizes these thoughts, they are screaming for help and will check themselves into the hospital voluntarily.

Any professional mandated to report anyone who is a danger to themselves or others to the proper authority. This means for us citizens who have a conscience and does not fear "getting involved," that we, too, report what we are seeing or hearing to the authorties. This usually means calling 911 and letting the professional on the other side of the line make a decision and get either law enforcement or a psychiatric team or a medical aid team - or all three - to the scene to evaluate and take appropriate action. If a psychological matter, a person can be admitted to a locked psych facility for three days without their concent. If a psychiatrist feels a person cannot be safely released after 72 hours, they can admit them for as much as two weeks. The person, if stablized before that time can be released at any time as the psychiatrist deems safe. If a crime had been committed by someone in a psychiatric state, they can be transferred to a jail following an appearance in court.

as a psychologist in training, i know psychologists are mandated by law to report it to the proper authorities, or we may need to help get the person hospitalized in order for him/her to be observed. sometimes, all a psychologist needs to do is be there to listen and offer help.
i take offense to that comment about drugging and going to the office party. we genuinely care about others.
