I have been single for nearly six months and I have had my share with meeting other guys around my age which I usually prefer. Every serious relationship I have had was with someone my age or slightly older or younger. The problem is that the guys I have been meeting these past few months never appeal to me because they are too feminine and act way too girly for me. The butcher men I have encountered want too much and want to nurture me all time.

Recently I came across a guy who I assumed was much older, approached him and had great conversations with. He seems to have a great head on his shoulders, envisions a normal, happy life with one man and stays away from the bar scene. He turned out to be only 19 but three weeks into our friendship I have really begun to like him.

I have heard that these types of relationships may lack substance and are a recipe for heartbreak. But I feel confident in him and want to proceed with a relationship.

What do you think?

I think you should proceed cautiously, play it by ear, and listen to your feelings. I would also like to say that maturity and age do not necessarily relate to one another. There are 18-year olds with the maturity of the average 30-year old. Conversely, there are some 30-year olds who lack the maturity of the average 16-year old. You sound mature enough. Just trust your own judgment. Good luck.

Well, first off, it depends on the people. if it works for you, great, but I have one particular guideline I usual stick to when giving advice on this sort of topic. College age (approx. 18-22) is a tricky spot. I do not think I have known a relationship that didnt either break up or go seriously downhill when one of the pair is at that age and the other is in highschool or already graduated. The couple years before college, the college years and the couple years after college are drastically different periods in someones life, more so than any other years, despite the relative age similarity between these groups.
Actually, I shouldnt assume your boy is in college. It makes a big difference. Just seriously think about what you want out of life right now and what he might want. If you both seem about on par with each other, or if you arent taking the relationship all that seriously, great, I hope it all works out for yall. But if it is as I expect and he is still getting a feel for adult life and you are getting ready to start settling into your routine, be careful. Dont demand to much of each other, emotionally or time and space-wise.

Since you are both adults, the age difference is less important than asking yourself why you like him. If you both share common interests, enjoy each other's company and are mutually attracted then there's no reason not to at least give it a chance. And once you've decided to do that, don't worry about it anymore. The age difference may never become a factor of concern if you are supportive of him in things that you have more experience in; and he, in fact, can be a reminder to you to keep things 'fresh' and not worry so much at this point and age. Eventually, if things go long-term, you all should balance out if you remain mutually supportive, respectful and tolerant. I’m not saying that everything will be smooth sailing all the time, but when is it? Don't be afraid of what you may consider to be 'taking a chance', particularly based on what other people think. The chance you take may be the chance of a lifetime!
