Well what are you into and what are you looking for out of a game?
Are you looking for a casual game here and there or wanting to be hooked and never stop until you finish?
Please add more details and I may be able to help you.

Hmmm... ok!

Well something with a dense story line and many hours of gaming would be "Baldur's Gate" (any one they are ALL good, whether it be "Tales of the Sword Coast my fav or the secind one)
It's an RPG (Role playing game) so you play the characters and you are responsible for their actions. It's set in a dark time when evil is rising, the static art is AMAZING and you will be completely caught up in the story which is some of the most deepest I have expirienced.

For fun I would recommend Grand TheftAuto III. This is much better than the later versions (ice City, San Andreas) and MUCH more fun!
If you don't mind a bit of shooting ; )
Do missions for various "bosses" get money and slowly make a reputation for yourself.

Why not some old school Battlefield 1942? More of a fun action game, control a lot of vehicles, planes, tanks, jeeps, artillery.
A lot of classes... sniper, assault, anti-tank, medic, engineer. Work with your team to defeat the enemy using anything you can! Ask for anti-tank support to watch a plane dive and destroy the once threatening tank.

The Elder Scrolls III Morrowind was an EXCELLENT game, I played it for 4 days straight once, it's a first person shooter and another RPG. Basically gain levels and get stronger and more powerful. It's a totally free game where you don't even have to touch the main quest.
Join guildes, do jobs for them, gain expirience and slowly rise the ranks.
Be ANYTHING! Theif, Mage, Fighter, Assassin... Anything! The only limit is your imagination.
Morrowind IV Oblvion was WAY overrated and you need a buffed up PC to play it. It was very beautiful graphics wise but compared to Morrowind III it felt too dumbed down and has a lot less depth to it.

Half-Life was and IS the most successful PC game EVER! It is very amazing (though very old) and you will keep playing it. You just want to to, "can I make it?"
Based on a top secret experiment gone wrong you are caught in the middle of it all, grab what you can to survive and make it to the surface of Black Mesa?
Full of a lot of mystery and suspence, scary moments and Easter Eggs which will continure to the next game.

It's predecssor is just as good if not better (amazingly BETTER graphics and physics wise...)
Half-Life 2.
This is a number of years after Half-Life's Black Mesa Incident. Without spoiling anything you are once again called to protect and help the earth from invaders.
The next episode is.. Half-Life 2 - Episode 1
Can you stop the forces of the Combine from taking over earth?

Here is a link where you can look at the reviews of all the games and see what you like.

(I'm Australian so just get rid of th au if your American)

What about some Flight simulators? Microsoft Flight simulators are pretty fun and laid back.

Call of Duty II was very intense and fun. First person shooter based in WWII.
Aim down the sights and shoot your enemy, slowly advance and get the enemy on their heels. Lay down fire and make sure the battle is yours.
Be Russian, American and British. Help push the invaders back to their country!

For the thief at heart, ever feel yourself striding towards the shadows and slowly walking towards your target without a sound?
Tthen the "Thief" series is for you! Learn the basics and learn how to be one of the shadows. Missions are great, stay in the shadow's to hide yourself and when the coast is clear move to another area. Navigate your way past guards or simple people minding their own business. Put out torches with water arrows to endure you are not seen or even throw some firworks down the hall to distract the enemy.
A great fun game always a favourite to be played at night!

SWAT 4 is another great one... Ever wanted to be the hero and save the day? Be part of the SWAT team and help save hostages. Use a non-lethal tazer to subdue your target or pepper spray someone that is not co-operating.
Throw flashbang, gas and sting grenades to stun anyone in the room.
Handcuff the baddies and lead the hostages to safety.

My favourite right now is Company of Heroes.. A RTS (real time strategy) So immense and just amazing! Can't explain how good it is!
Build units, take control of territory and slowly lock it down so the enemy can't have it.
Build Armoured Vehicles, Snipers, Heavy Machine Gun teams and even Tanks.
Takes quite a lot to learn but is very fun!
But truth be told once you master this game any RTS is quite easy!

I have given you but a VERY limited idea of what you should have, hope this helped! And please ignore the scrappy typing. ^_^ I type it up in a matter of minutes.

Other titles that are good are as followed...

Neverwinter Nights
Icewind Dale
Call of Duty
Medal of Honor - Allied Assault
Medal of Honor - Pacific Assault
The Final Fantasy games...
...blah blah blah = D Go have fun! That's what games are for!

Ignore mixmaster first, he has no idea what he's talking about, vista sucks, and isn't optimized, you can trust me because he think's that's a dual core, not a quad core. It all looks nice except the ram. You can't have 4gb of ram, because XP Home is a 32-bit OS, and 32-bit os's can recognize 4gb of ram total, including ALL the ram on the system, like the .5gb on the video card, so you can only have 2gb if it's a 32-bit. the only 64-bit os for xp is XP Professional 64-bit edition, but its $50 more expensive, so you'd best go with 2gb ram, and maybe upgrade the gpu to the hd4870 or hd3870x2. If you're not going to run crossfire, you don't need a 700w power supply. a 500 or 600 watt will do fine, which will give you extra money for a better video card. If it was me, I'd go AMD, but it's not, so yeah, thats a good build.

Sid Meier's Pirates
