"Dual-Core" is a generic term which applies to the technology, not a specific model of processor.

The Pentium-D is an older dual-core processor, and it's not very efficient. AMD's Athlon X2 series of dual-core processors outperform the Pentium-D by a wide margin.

The Core 2 Duo is the latest dual-core processor, and it's the best on the market. It's about 20% faster than the AMD X2 line, and it costs less! Definitely king of the hill for now...

Pentium D with dual cores share system clock speed, whereas Core 2 duo have two separate clock speeds. If there's a computer with a Pentium D chip that says it is 3 Ghz, both cores share this speed. A core 2 duo processor that has 2.4 GHz is actually faster because each core has this, making it actually 4.8 GHz total.

Also, the core 2 duo chip is the newest and fastest. It is also the most energy efficient. They are up to 40% faster than pentium D processors.

The real difference - much better multitasking and handling of very high intense applications like burning, gaming and other graphics intense software.

D and Dual core are the same, but the Core 2 Duo is the latest version of the dual core pentium processor.
