Actually, most of the homeless are people who suffer from mental disorders such as Schizophrenia. Unfortunately, they have no options but the street since long term care programs in most states are not sufficient. In order to receive long term mental care, it often requires a violent crime be committed.
Other cases often include former prisoners who are released, often after cases of dealing crack cocaine. They are unfortunately living the consequences of bad choices in these cases.
This is not to say that they are in any way lesser individuals, and I sympathize with them. However, the scenario where an individual has a fire and loses everything, making them homeless, is almost unheard of, due to insurance and other liquid assets that most individuals rely on.

No.
I used to know a few and they were better off than I was.
"Tony" made $50+ a day just sitting with a sign.
He lived under the bridge in a box, had a TV set, refrigerator, microwave (all found in the alley, all working) and he paid no electricity because he climbed the pole and hot wired it. I think he even got himself cable.
He also got $400 a month in General Assistance.
Free care at County Hospital.
$150 in food stamps.
He was doing quite well.
Almost $20K a year and he paid no taxes.
His only expenses was food and drink and he drank a lot. We called him drunk Tony.

No, I don't think they are less of a person than I am. I don't judge them, I have no idea why they are homeless in the first place. They usually have some problem that got them into this situation and I know how hard some problems can be, so I don't judge and just wish that things will get better for them soon.

I don't look down on anyone. No one is better then anyone else.
And yes it could happen in a minute to anyone. we need to help. if only more people would take the time to help.
