because when he was a kid he had a big fear of bats and he also had a fear of being an orphan and when he was like 10 or so his parent where murdered and since then he did not have anymore fears and he decided to be batman.

In the comic, he knew that "criminals are a superstitious, cowardly lot" (i think that was the quote) and wanted to be something they would fear. As he was pondering what to do in his study, a bat flies in through the window and that's what gave Bruce the inspiration...

Bats were his greatest feat. He conquered it and then felt connected to them so he figured he could put that fear into other people by using the bat as a symbolic image.

He was bitten by a bat. I know cause I got bit by a radioactive sheep. I try to keep it on the downlow cause I don't want to be refered to as sheep girl. If everyone started calling me that all the english guys on the site would seek me out and try to hump me. I wish I could have been bitten by something cool, but I deal with the hand I was given.
