I have been a full-time teacher now for three years, in a secondary school. Through experience I have realised that there is a huge generation gap between me and my students. this is probably due to our fast changing societys. I feel that methods being used generally in schools are not successful anymore. I would greatly appreciate anybody who works with teenagers and has new or innovative methods of dealing with bad discipline or knows of any reports or studies on the subject.

I'm a special ed teacher and I base all of my behavior plans on ideas I get from "The Teachers Encyclopedia of Behavior Management: 100 Problems 500 Solutions." You can get it on Amazon. It does a great job of helping determine the causes of behavior, rating how bad the behavior really is (i.e. is there something simple you can do before you get into serious behavior modification mode), and giving you other ideas of what to do about every imaginable behavior. It's the most useful book I have ever bought for teaching. I hope this helps.

Fill that generation gap. To realate to the students more you should farmiliarize yourself with things they talk about. By doing that you will have a better realtionship with your students and eliminate most of the bad behavior b/c theyll like you. Everyone likes a quick witted and personable teacher.

Teenagers need unconditional acceptance. Your students shouldnt feel that you are trying to disciplen them, or that you are being self-rightous, or playing dad. You are dealing with a difficult age, and you have to tolerate their subborness untill they really love you and feel safe with you, only then they will look up to you and become ready to listen. Listen to them and be understanding. Dig out for their positivity and energy, they will love that.
