It was an Agatha Christie novel "The Murder of Roger Ackroyd". it wasn't until I got to the end that I realised the book was missing the last ten pages. I was on holiday in the country and couldn't get another copy for three weeks. That was frustrating and suspenseful. Not that it was a literary masterpiece, mind you.

The most suspenseful book I ever read was actually non-fiction...Shadow Divers by Robert Kurson. It's about some divers who found a sunken German U-boat off the coast of New Jersey. It's awesome!

Life Expectancy by Dean Koontz. The opening create suspense for the rest of the book. And everything builds on everything else and it keeps you guessing. Told by a great storyteller.

Strangers on a Train by Patricia Highsmith. She also wrote the Ripley series.
Also check out "In Cold Blood" by Truman Capote. This is non-fiction written in novel form. Great.
