To whom it may concern,

I am currently a high school student and today was basically the most horrific day in my life, for i was caught supposedly for cheating. Of course, I do not admit that i cheated, not at all, but my teacher--without accepting any of my comments--had basically claimed that i cheated, giving me a zero on a paper that lowers my grade 2% to 3% as a result. This is an AP class that i am informing to you, and currently, I have a 92.3%, which i have achieved very hard, even sacrificing my hours of sleep. So i would like to briefly summarize what has happened. There was homework based on a video we watched and it was due today, meaning that we had yesterday to work on. Thus, i have finished all my work at 5 o'clock a.m.--still sacrificing my sleeping hours like usual, giving me an hour and a half of sleep for a day--and came to class. My friend, who attempted his homework and finished 3/4 of it, has asked me help for a particular question (one question) because he did not understand what the question was asking. Since the question was complex and hard to explain, i decided to show what i have written for my answer so that he can get an idea of what the question is asking. Of course, like always, i told him not to copy my answer before i gave him my work because i knew cheating is an illegal rule within the school. While my friend was holding my paper, my teacher witnessed this scene, and soon claimed that we were cheating, giving us a zero. I denied very hard, for i was just doing a beneficent action, trying to help my friend. I even claimed that i would receive a 50% on it as a consequence, but nothing worked. We were definitely not intending to cheat and he did not ask me for a particular problem to see my answers and copy exactly what i have wrote. I just wanted to help, and that's all, but as a result, doing something good gave me a zero, a very harsh consequence to me personally.
What i really want as a answer from you is that is this cheating? If so, is this a fair consequence? My goal is to get into a good college but this one assignment may ruin my dream, for this one assignment can give me a B, something what i do not want as a semester grade. You may just think, "Oh its just a B", but for me, a B is a F. This grade can depend on my future, for i want to major in something related to biology (yes, this is a AP bio class). I believe that my consequences should at least be less severe and i want your opinion. I believe that cheating is an action where the person knows and plans to cheat. But for me, in this case, I did not intend to cheat, or have him copy exactly what I wrote on my homework. Of course, there are many ways for me to inform my ideas but what came to my mind right at that moment is for me to show what i wrote so he can get the idea what the question is asking about. Is this cheating? I did not even think about cheating; I just wanted to help, and how i showed my answer is what my brain told me to do. In addition, I want to know what the exact definition of cheating really is. What is cheating? To what extent is cheating? If i were to instead tell my friend what i wrote (as a brief summary but not word for word), isnt this also cheating since he is using my idea? If this was cheating, then everything would be cheating. Why is my teacher ruining my life for this one assignment? I wanted to help a student and i did so. What happened? I got a zero.

From,
A student

Please reply, I need your help.

I think you have been very unfortunate and what I think you need to do is print out what you have written here and attempt to speak to the headteacher of your school. You are very skilled at getting your point across, so I think you will be able to explain the situation very well.
Can you involve your parents as moral supporters? You need a responsible adult to vouch for your honesty, and also to support you as you try to clear your name.
It seems very harsh and I think perhaps the teachers response was immediate and maybe they didn't think that a good student like yourself would not need to resort to cheating to obtain good grades.
In the heat of the moment we all tend to over react, they have a job to do and must be seen to be carrying out their duties professionally. But I feel after a day or so to reflect, the teacher who did this will have calmed down and be ready to talk about the issue with you and you deserve the chance to make your point.
I wish you good luck in this

It doesn't sound to me like what you did was any different from what would have happened if he came over to your house and you had worked on the assignment together. You should understand that your teacher is up against quite a lot and there are probably students in your class who copy one another's answers so that they will not have to do the work all the time and she just hasn't been able to catch them.

The only difference between that and what you have done is intent - if your intent was to help him learn the material and his intent was to learn it and to answer in his own words, then I would say that you were not cheating. As you are a good student, I would say that she probably could believe that you had good intentions. But what about the other student involved? I definitely agree with the other answers in that you should get your parents involved first. Put yourself in the position of the teacher though; if you call her in front of the principal you are effectively questioning her abilities in front of her boss. Rather than do that right off the bat, I would go in with your parents to see her alone first. If she refuses to budge - and she might just to make a point - you might ask if there is some kind of extra credit that you can work on to make up for the lost grade.

Either way, getting a B in AP Biology is definitely not going to be the end of the world. Plenty of good colleges will still accept you!

Get spell check, work on your grammar, shorten it I am afraid the administration may lose interest because it is so long.
If you showed someone else your answer and it was in a situation where they should have had no access, ie; copying would be cheating, you are out of luck, you cheated. I wish it was different, but that is the way I think the school will find. It's not necessarily fair I know, but he could have asked the teacher to explain the quesiton instead of you and it would not have been an issue.
Still, it is worth pursuing getting the decision reveresed or getting extra credit for something to make it up as it is your education and your future.

I think that was a VERY harsh way to handle it. What you did was probably not the right thing to do. But, you seem like the perfect student! And you have a good GPA at this point. I would schedule a one on one meeting with the teacher, and maybe even get your parents involved if they would be open to it. The worst thing the teacher could say is that she/he is not going to change her/his mind. Buuuuut you could always ask for something to do for extra credit to balance things out. Im hate this for you! Also, you may could speak to the principal if speaking to the teacher does not help. Principals are very "open door" now days. GOOD LUCK :-)

I pity you. I shall like to believe your version since a promising student will not risk his prospects carelessly. Besides your teacher should know the type of each student under him by now. But some teachers are simply harsh on everyone. He is sure to argue that the student who wanted a clarification from you ought to have asked from his teacher and not a fellow student and there was no guarantee that he tried to understand the question by reading your answer. If he did not understand it even by reading your answer he is sure to copy the answer preferred by you. In terms of rules the act - however innocent and well conceived - is likely to objected by most teachers of the day....
So dear never take chance in future... Try to explain to a fellow teacher who can understand and speak in favour of you... Good luck.

take time after school to explain what happenned and he or she will probably understand and give you the points or at least let you retake it.

Even if the teacher doesn't believe you just ask to retake the test alone after school.

Run, don't walk to your guidance counselor and explain what happened. Hopefully the situation can be ironed out there. If not, request a meeting with the school principal.

The person who you were helping should come forward and help explain to the teacher that you were only trying to help if this situation is genuine.

I feel sorry for you. it is a pitiable condition .i do appreciate your intention to help your friend. but knowing that your school rule is against showing your home work answers to friends you could asked him to clarify his doubt to your teacher. i didn't mean that what you did is cheating but it is an alternative. i would advice you to tell this to your parents, get their suggestion and meet your principal and promise this won't happen again. i believe they will be convinced. you won't loose your assignment marks. good luck. please forgive me if my opinion is wrong.
