Yes, two computers can share the same modem for Internet access. (dial up or DSL modem)
You would need a hub / switch or cross over cable and for the main computer to be running ICS (Internet Connection Sharing)
Obviously that computer also needs to be on.
The best solution though is to get an ethernet router like a Draytek or Netgear.

The other answers are correct. Get a router (wireless or not).
Otherwise you can share your internet connection in the settings, then link two computers together using a crossover cable.
The first way is easiest and best.

Yes you can I am running four at the moment & it is correct that you need a router, you san get them from any p.c retailer for around £30 or go wireless for a bit more.

you can, but its a kludge, you have to connect both PCs together, then you have to have the one connected to the modem on all the time.
much easier to use a router modem.
