The Republican party has enjoyed popular success for years, largely due to Reagan and his legacy. Sadly, there is little left of his idealism left in the party, and this was necessary for the continued success at the polls.
The states that have been deciding the presidency for seven of the last ten elections in favor of the GOP have "traditional values". This has historically meant less government and therefore less spending. However, times have changed drastically. While our leaders have continued to preach "family values" and spout off phrases alluding to Christian morality, the real world has continued indifferent to their defiance. Most of the people voting Republican today are doing so for two reasons:
1. Perception that Republicans are stronger in National Security and Defense
2. A desire for more traditional values, with limits and restrictions passed on what is acceptable behavior.
Both of these mandates require excessive amounts of spending, and increased litigation and legislation. Not exactly what William F. Buckley had in mind, I think.
Despite the nature of your question, perhaps the best way to correct the problem IS to hand the "government" (actually just the presidency) over to the Democrats and regroup. One or two terms of "over-spending" by the Democrats could be an excellent eye-opener to the Republican party, and perhaps reawaken the Conservative ideal championed by so many sucsessful Republicans from the past.

I wouldn't say they've moved towards the left economically, they've simply gotten careless. Remember Clinton did some wonders for the economy and he was pretty liberal.
For conservative Republicans to actually mean something anymore they're going to have to separate themselves from the party. Becoming libertarians is sadly the only answer. You don't have to deal with the social B.S. of the religious right and you can hold onto your fiscally conservative views.
I, however, will stay on the left promoting an economy that not only benefits me and the top earners in society, but everyone in this country.

Create a third party emphasizing the importance of truly conservative fiscal values, and nationally promote your platform and values. Good luck getting the funding, or the ballot access. The system's rigged for this "two-party" (bullsh!t) system, third parties are screwed unless they bend over backwards to fulfill legislative requirements created only to serve the republicrats and the demicans and their bid for permanent control..

stop throwing votes at any hypocrite who wraps himself in the American flag and tells you he believes in God and mom and apple pie and how he's going to beat the crap out of the terrorists. These people are only pushing your buttons and manipulating you for their own power addiction and monetary gain. their motto is "never underestimate the stupidity of the Republican voter base." Stop proving it correct.
