I have a friend who really needs money, and she'd like to get a job.
She's already made up her mind, and she said a friend had told her that he got some kind of permit to work at only thirteen.

Is this true? And if it is, can someone tell me how to get one?

NO. Under the child labor law, persons ages 14 and 15 can get a special work permit, but not someone who is 13, unless they are in the entertainment industry (for example, a child actor in L.A.)
If your friend really needs some money she needs to take a class on baby sitting and get CPR certified. These classes are often offered at the health department in your county. Look in the phone book for the health departments number. If they don't offer the class on babysitting where you live, ask them who does, and contact them instead.
Then she can put up an ad in the paper with her information and get to work.

Edit: they can also get a job delivering newspapers..but you have to get up really early in the morning. And certain jobs in the agricultural industry...and if her family owns their own business she would be permitted to work there under certain conditions...but really I think babysitting is her best bet

What your friend is probably refering to is a work permit. Yes. Every state ( even counties or cities ) is different. The first thing you need is good grades because the schools in many states work with the employer to make sure you don't work past a certain time or a certain # of hours. If your grades go down they will pull the permit. One friend I went to school with didn't get a permit but the local law said it had to be a Family run & owned business. You're too young for most jobs because the companies have Insurance limitations or local laws say you can't operate key things needed to do the job. ( Like trash compactors or saws ). Try family owned places like resteraunts for a bussing position or answering phones. They will probably be the most helpful to you. Just make sure you do a good job at work & in school or you will not be happy in life later. Good luck!

Jon is right it is up to the states but...

It is usually very ,limited as to what industries you can go into, the best thing would be to visit your states Employment Agency and see what you can find there. Most cases you can only work for a family farm at that age and even then you are not allowed to operate machinery. 13-15 is a very restrictive time for a job.

Hope this info helps.

each state has different laws but there are exceptions which allow 13 year olds to work, but finding an employer will be difficult.
