I am answering this question, keeping only cricket as a game in mind.
LUCK:
It is the biggest factor in Cricket.
because:
1. A batsman can ne out on a very bad ball and he can slice or edge the best ball for a 4 or 6.
2. A bowler can get a wicket for a bad ball on account of a superb catch by a fielder. Similarly, a bowler balls a good ball and fielder drops a very easy catch.
3.Umpire can err in ruling batsman not out. The famous story that I recollect is Viv Richards was not very successfull in his initial innings as a test player, before he scored 190 odd runs. He was out before he scored any runs and if he had been given out, Viv would have taken another 6 months to be back in West Indies team.

In a sporting sense it is to be highly competitive.
During the sixties, the pc brigade had their way and discouraged the will to win in schools sports, on the notion that there must'nt be winners and losers but only participants.
This policy is now manifesting itself in the performances of the English national teams who by their very demeanor are now only participating. Compare this to the approach that the Aussies, New Zealanders and to some extent the Irish bring to their performances.

Determination: You are not going to get there if you don't want to.
Ambition: You need to have a set of goals. There is no point wanting to be successful if you don't know i what you are going to succeed
Social skills: If you are a nice person to be with and to work with, with a great sense of team spirit and consideration, your chances of success will be greater. People simply don't like to work to hang out with nasty, self centred brats.
Support: If you have support, it is easier to turn your dream into reality.

Determination. It doesn't matter as much how hard you work because even a hard worker gets beaten down. Determination will push you foward when nothing else will & see you to your goal. A child doesn't work hard, but if they are determined will find a way to get what they want. See the difference?
