Does it have something to do with the number of precincts that respond to the call?

Yes, you are absolutely correct. I am unable to get you a link that describes what the different number of alarms means as our company policy will not allow me to load the page, but go to Google and do a search on 'multiple alarm fire' and you should get a link to an article entitled "Five-alarm fire@Everything2.com" which will explain what the differences are.

the original alarm gets a response usually of one truck , if its too much they put out another alarm, by five it means its pretty big and usually other departments have joined the first one in fighting this fire.
