Something is wrong with my bio wheel filter and it seems to have died. It was working before I unplugged it to do a water change, and now it has died. Help?

Did you pour water into it to prime it again? I often have the same problem but once I pour water into it, it starts up just fine.

Make sure that the Impellar is'nt jammed by some type of material like extra food or some thing. If that is fine then make sure you fill your filter with water. If that still has'nt worked then make sure you take your bio wheel out and soak it in your fish tank to completely soak it. When you stopped your filter the top part of of the bio wheel became dry so the wheel is unbalanced should work after these three steps

water change only every few months!?!?!?!!?
my golly I'm surprised you're fish are not dead!!

Bio-Wheel: clean it real good, all parts.
then plug it back in, and pour a little water in it to prime it, if it still does not work. pick it up (not out of the water) and slightly tap it on top of the aquarium.... not hard but lightly.

my bio wheel got like that one time but it was when I was still new to fish keeping and didn't realize you need to take ALL the parts out for a good cleaning.
I do my water changes every 2 weeks, and I take the whole filter apart for a good cleaning every other month or so.. but I keep my filter pads clean.
good luck.
here is my fish website.

With a bio wheel you only need to change out 25% of the water so you don't actually have to unplug it. When the wheel stopped spinning the top portion became dry and now it is out of balance. Take the wheel out and soak it down in a container to equalize the weight then it should spin. Don't over feed your fish and keep enough cats and loaches to keep the bottom clean. My tank stays crystal clear all the time and I only change out a small portion of the water every few months.

very common occurrence after a power failure. the filter is fine, the impeller is stuck in place. simply remove the intake tube, remove the impeller, clean the impeller well with a Q-tip and then replace everything. fill the filter with water and there you go. cleaning the impeller well should be part of regular filter cleaning.

Almost all power filters need to be refilled to prime.
