It should take between half an hour to one hour depending the size of hard disk, data on it and the amount of RAM and the speed of the processor.

There are a few things you can do is to remove unneeded programs from startup, clean registry, and delete temp files created by windows and other programs.

Hi,

Defrag does work as long as there is a need to perform it - check the defrag analysis too see.
Ity will speeed things up a bit (dependant on how fragmented your drive is!) but nothing drastic.

I have alswatys found that every 18 - 24 months it is best to reload your PC/Laptop with a clean install of windows as it just gets bogged down.

Also try running something like Spybot or Adaware to make sure spyware is not slowing machine.

Defrag takes as long as your drive is in size... I know my 80GB drive takes a good few hours - start it wehen you get in from work and it should be done for bedtime... or if you feel ok about it start before work and it should be done when you treturn.

cheers

it depends on how big your drive is. if your drive is 100 G or more it will probably take some time.

you can go to bios setup and remove the system boot check to speedup the boot sequence of your PC. upgrade is the best thing to do. upgrade your processor, intel duo core is the best processor in the market to date. RAM also helps a lot. try upgrading it to 2 G, and see what happens.

viruses can also cause your system to slow down in some ways. try scanning your drives.

Since you have never done it then it will more then likely take a long time. Be sure and empty the cookies and temporary internet files. As for ideas of speeding up your computer I think one of the following links will help you out.

It depends on the space allocated to C:. My C: has 9.31 GB space(including free and used), and it takes 40-50 minutes. You may apply arithmetic to estimate yours.

TIPS TO SPEED UP COMPUTER :-
Please have the patience to read ALL of these:

1.Download CCleaner from http://www.ccleaner.com/ and run it once daily before shutting down your computer. It removes all the trash files that are created while surfing through the net. Use its Issues section once every 2 weeks to delete all the unused registry keys. If you have a lot of Auto Start entries, then you can remove them from its Tools>Startup. But keep the important ones like firewall and the real-time protection shields of your anti-virus and anti-spyware.

2.Keep a decent anti-virus, a strong firewall and two anti-spywares in your computer. Always keep the real time protection shield (or resident shield) of the anti-virus and one of the anti-spyware active. Update them and scan your computer once every week with both the anti-spyware and once every 2 weeks with anti-virus. I have given the links to some free and good anti-virus, anti-spyware and firewall; get them all:
AVG: http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition/3000-2239_4-10596553.html?tag=lst-0-1
AdAware SE: http://www.download.com/ad-aware-se-pers...
SpyBot Search and Destroy: http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/spy...
Comodo Personal Firewall: http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/d...

Never keep two anti-virus or firewall on a single system. If you are already using a good anti-virus or firewall, then you need not download the corresponding one. You can, however, use as many anti-spywares as you want.

3.Keep a virtual memory booster as an auto-start entry. It frees the clogged RAM. I use RAM Booster, which is very effective. Here is the link to download it:
http://www.download.com/rambooster/3000-...
After downloading it, follow the steps:
*. Click on Edit>Options and tick the follow options:
(a) Set auto optimisation on
(b) Show CPU usage
(c) Start minimised
(d) Launch automatically at start up
Also, increase the auto optimisation level and 'Mb of RAM to free at auto level' as per your requirement.

4.Keep at least 35% of your C: free. Transfer all the music, image and video files to other drives.

5.Defragment your hard drives (especially C:) once every month. To defrag, go to Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Defragment. It takes a lot of time (50 minutes or over) so don’t become impatient. It’s for your computer’s good.

6.Get the free Google Web Accelerator to boost up your Internet speed.
http://webaccelerator.google.com/

7.Keep your Recycle Bin empty.

8.Use minimum possible shortcut icons on your desktop.

9.If you have genuine Windows, keep it updated every month.

10.Trim down the number of games if you have way too many.

If nothing works, you should reformat your computer.

All the software I have mentioned are free, but if you are willing to spend some bucks, then upgrade your RAM(preferably 512 MB or higher).

it may take a while to derangement seeing that you have never done it and yes you should do it at least once a week.... also getting rid of any unwanted programs will speed up your PC.. go to run and type msconfig, then go to the last tab "start up" and unchecked any programs that you don't need to start when your PC starts... the only ones you really need is your anti-virus and registry mechanic if you have one... if you don't have a registry mechanic you should get one as this will speed up your PC as well... also get a program called say-bot search and destroy its free to download and it will get rid of ad-ware and spy-bots... that just the start and if you want any more info just email me

it depends on how big your hard drive is. For my 200 gig about 35 minutes. It does make a little difference in your performance.

defragmenting is an essential part of maintenance for your PC.
be sure to turn off your screen saver first. if not it will keep restarting and will never finish.
