No, you should only update if you have a problem and it is BIOS related.

There is no clear answer. But usually for tech-geeks like us we will usually do it. :) There are a lot of reasons. Simple ones being we are always trying/testing out something. Having upgraded BIOS may boast the computer performance or allow you to try out new stuff depending on the upgrade. But in today's computer, common folks probably do not need to bother with them since they hardly change the peripherals of the computer. In the past it was important because the older mainboard can only support up to certain capacity for harddisk for example. Thus an upgraded BIOS allows the mainboard to recognize the new higher capacity harddisk.
Usually BIOS update allows you to use newer technologies which was probably not available when the board was manufactured. Or sometimes update will fix some serious hardware compatibility problems with some peripherals.

I have never needed to update the bios... from my experience, it is best to leave the bios alone, unless you know exactly what setting you are going in there to change. If you have gotten a new computer (say from Dell, or whatever) you probably would never need to do such a thing. Going in to mess around with the bios is something people did 6 or 7 years ago with windows 95/98 machines that needed upgrading. With newer machines (windows xp and up) I would never imagine it being needed. I'm no expert, but I hope this helps.

Been in tech support for a long time, and have noticed that some tiny winy things might come up if you dont upgrade, likle a wireless card not working or memory related issues. It is always better to upgrade but unless you are very sue of the proper instructions and how to go about it, dont do it.

my personal opinion is no, I have never seen the need to do it. The thing you should remember is that it can be alot of hassel and mess your pc up. it's not for the faint hearted.
