The soap or cleaning solution needs to be low sudsing. Dishwashing or laundry soap is high sudsing and dishwasher soap is low sudsing. Actually, you should not really inject the soap into the carpet but use for surface dirt with a scrubber. Soap left in the carpet will attract more dirt and spots quicker than a steamed only carpet. You may wish to consider TSP and a mild, low sudsing cleanser. Always test before use on the whole carpet. Try pre-treating high stain or dirty areas and then after scrubbing the carpet, vacuum the whole carpet then rinse with the steam. If all else fails, go with wood floors and area rugs, like I have.
