I chewed once and kinda liked it. I know it is the raw material for cocaine but itself is not harmful.

No not buzz. I was in Peru and the locals offered it to me as a means to alleviate hypoxia (altitude sickness). They have been using it for thousands of years.

NO. Just like you can't have marijuana plants, the kind of poppy that makes heroin, hash, etc.
And coca leaf IS harmful. Most of the indians who grow and pick it for the drug industry in South America are addicted to it...
google it and educate yourself.

And yeah...they've been taking it there for a long time. But they are not exactly the most educated people (the fault of the govt. not them). I really can't believe anyone would be so stupid as to take this stuff.... It IS bad for you....as I said...if you would have taken the time to google this you would have found your answer....but I guess if you are going to believe what they tell you in Peru you don't know that if you google "coca leaf illegal united states" you would come up with a plethora of information about this subject...

Plenty of overblown hysteria in the responses here.

You can order the leaves for making coca tea on the internet, and they will ship to the U.S., even though the leaves are illegal here.
Customs may or may not seize it, if so, that's all they will do. You just won't recieve it, and you will face no charges unless it was a large enough shipment that suggested you were manufacturing cocaine from the leaves.

I seriously couldn't see someone get arrested for chewing coca leaves, when down the street someone's moving kilos out of their trunk.

It is the same drug... yet it's not. The leaves themselves are pretty mild. Consider the difference between sipping a cup of coffee and snorting lines of NoDoz.

Still, any form of cocaine is addictive, and a nasty habit.

I've purchased coca leaves at South American supermarkets in the US. Clearly its not a seen as a major concern nor should it be. Its very mild, like a cup of coffee but without the jitters. Funny how our society will shun natural products based on propaganda like "Refer Madness" yet we are completely oblivious or accepting of preservatives, pesticides, and products like aspartame in the food we eat everyday which our horribly destructive to our bodies. Aspartame alone is has been proven to cause over 91 different negative affects including death and blindness, but since our society and the propaganda surrounding it makes us believe its OK we consume it everyday. Yes all those sugar free diet products are legal poison. Aspartame is straight poison.

It amounts to cultural and societal norms, not because a people are stupid or uneducated as someone above suggested (that comment in its self is stupid and uneducated). To much of a lot of things can be bad including coffee or chocolate which are also addictive. Personally I would certainly choose natural solutions over the chemical and manufactured medications and solutions our society sees as proper or acceptable.

Plenty of places to buy it including online, and there are positive medicinal uses. Not to beat a broken drum, but anything in excess can be harmful. Coca leaves are unlikely to cause any severe addictive or drug seeking habits or withdraw issues. I have used it and purchased it in the US (and paid tax on it), with no "addictive" issues. Just like a cup of coffee but without the jitters.

If it, the tea, is legal-I would seriously question the ingrediants. I doubt if the tea is regulated. So if they use a related plant/strain that does not contain the active ingediant(s), then it isn't questioned.
