I would suggest a long informal chat with your nine year old. There MUST be a reason and the problem might stem from the Aunt NOT the child.
I have 3 children and at 9 years there is normally a good reason that he might be afraid to tell anyone about ??? Good luck.

The nephew's parents must do pick on the aunt as well, either when she is or not. He has to get these ideas from somewhere.
