Shakaijin-"society person" means someone who works for a living, as opposed to a student, pensioner or a homemaker, etc.-although homemakers do have a lot of hard work. Put the shin-"new" in front and it means a person who has just left school and started their first full time job. They are often referred to as freshmen. I gave Kenny a thumbs-up for his answer! Often freshmen get assigned menial tasks like reserving spots for cherry blossom viewing etc.

æ° = New, ç¤¾ä¼ = Society, 人 = People. So, I guess it's modern people, people in modern time, or people in the modern society?
